STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- There’s now a cleaner, more eco-friendly way to get around New York City.

On Wednesday, Uber announced that Uber Green, the company’s electric and hybrid vehicle initiative, has expanded to over 1,400 North American cities, including the Big Apple.

“We all have a role to play in protecting our environment, and as the largest mobility platform, it’s our responsibility to aggressively tackle climate change,” said Harry Hartfield, public affairs manager for Uber in New York.

Uber Green allows riders to pay an additional $1 fee to ride in an electric or hybrid vehicle. The $1 fee is split between the driver and a designated company fund to help transition additional Uber drivers to cleaner vehicles.

The expansion of Uber Green is part of the company’s $800 million investment to transition hundreds of thousands of drivers to electric vehicles by 2025, with plans for all U.S. trips to take place in electric vehicles by 2030, and for the entire platform to reach carbon neutrality by 2040.

Uber Green has been integrated with the Uber Pass membership program, meaning members will receive 10% off on all rides in electric vehicles. Additionally, members will earn 3x the reward points for booking a trip with Uber Green.

“The launch of Uber Green and our commitment to electrifying vehicles on our platform are important parts of our larger efforts, and we will continue to take bold steps to confront climate change head on,” Hartfield added.
