From the new Studio Museum in Harlem to Little Island on the Hudson, NYC's cultural projects have soldiered on despite the pandemic.

What would New York be without its museums? They took a hard hit during the pandemic, but plans for the future soldiered on. A look at all the projects underway around the city offers proof that New York is as alive as ever.

The Studio Museum in Harlem

The new home for the Studio Museum in Harlem, designed by Adjaye Associates, will be the institution's first home entirely conceived and built for its dynamic contemporary art program.

The Frick Collection, Upper East Side

This year the Frick began renovations on its Gilded Age mansion on Fifth Avenue, led by Selldorf Architects. It marks the first comprehensive upgrade and expansion to the historic institution since it opened in 1935. In the meantime it's temporarily moving into the Met Breuer building on Madison Avenue.

Little Island, Pier 54, Hudson River

On the Hudson (literally), Little Island, the $250 million park and arts venue financed by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg, is expected to be completed next spring. Thomas Heatherwick, the designer of the Vessel at Hudson Yards, is behind this project—he has designed 132 tulip-shaped pots meant to mimic a floating leaf. In addition to 2.4 acres of green space, the park will also have an amphitheater for performances.

The New Museum, Lower East Side

Rem Koolhaas’s OMA is designing a second building for the New Museum, the firm's first public building in NYC. The new construction, which will complement the institution's SANAA-designed flagship, will span 60,000 square feet and have three floors dedicated to exhibitions.
