NEW YORK CITY — Fun in the sun is dangerous when it’s as hot as it’s been.
But because of the pandemic, New York City pools didn’t open as usual this summer.
This is the first full week to enjoy 8 of the city’s 53 outdoor public pools:
- Bronx: Mullaly Pool
- Brooklyn: Kosciuszko Pool, Sunset Pool
- Manhattan: Wagner Pool
- Queens: Liberty Pool, Fisher Pool
- Staten Island: Lyons Pool, Tottenville Pool
Andre Murph and his family visited the pool in Bed-Stuy at the corner of Marcy and Dekalb avenues.
“The water was very refreshing,” his son Andre Murph Jr. said.
They said that crowds were not as large as in previous summers.

6 other pools will open Saturday, August 1:
- Bronx: Crotona Pool, Haffen Pool
- Brooklyn: Betsy Head Pool
- Manhattan: Jackie Robinson Pool, Marcus Garvey Pool
- Queens: Astoria Pool
Hamilton Fish Pool in Manhattan’s East Village needed some maintenance and is expected to open soon.
The remaining 38 will remains closed for now. The city’s budget and the impact of the virus are to blame.
People are traveling from other parts of their boroughs to get to the pools that are open.
Mayor Bill de Blasio stopped by the Kosciuszko Pool in Bed-Stuy. There was no swimming or shaking hands for him. Lifeguards and staff are enforcing rules of social distance.
Masks can only be off when swimming.

Social distance and occupancy rules are also being monitored there. Some locations have reported lower than average attendance.
